Long Beach is well known for its diversity, the Aquarium of the Pacific and plentiful public parks and possibly the most stress-free airport in all of southern California; but don’t let all those things take all the glory! Long Beach is a foodie’s dream come true! There are too many restaurants to write about, but start by trying these gems!
Sophy’s Fine Thai & Cambodian Restaurant
Also known as the Cambodian Capital of the United States and Little Cambodia, this one mile long stretch of Anaheim Street between Atlantic and Junipero Avenues is host to a number of Cambodian restaurants, among the must-see (and eat), is Sophy’s Fine Thai & Cambodian Restaurant! Although Sophy’s uses “Thai” in their name but they’re actually more faithful to their Cambodian food culture than many other restaurants in Cambodia Town. Don’t leave without chowing down on Cambodian Beef Jerky!
Rance’s Chicago Style Pizza
As the saying goes “Good things come to those who wait!” At Rance’s, it may take 45 minutes for the pizza here to finally make it to your table, but it’s worth every second of the wait. If you haven’t had Chicago Style Pizza before, Rance’s is the perfect place to start. You’ll be eating this pie with a fork and knife; the crust has a taste and texture almost like a shortbread and the way the toppings, sauce and cheese ooze together is simply delicious. Cancel your trip to Chicago and put the money away for a rainy day because Rance’s is just as authentic as the pie back east!
Big Mista’s BBQ
You know the food is good when people are willing to stand in line and wait for it! Big Mista’s is the BBQ of your dreams! They’ve got the beef brisket your mouth has been watering for, but their smoked turkey may sell out before you arrive! Their homemade sauces, freshly baked bread and pineapple slaw are all stand out favorites. And despite the long line, the staff here is used to the frenzy, you’ll be treated like you’re the most important customer all day; they make you feel right at home!
Long Beachers looking to get their seafood fix had few options, luckily that seems to be changing. Roe is a success story of a food truck that led to a full-service restaurant. The atmosphere is inviting, the service is top notch and there does not seem to be a seafood dish that is not excellent! Start the meal with a craft cocktail, ceviche, chowder or bisque or jump right into the main course with scallops, salmon or get the King Crab legs of your dreams (already shelled).
